Overview

Washington Conservation Action (WCA) seeks an experienced communications professional to develop stories, write external communications, and provide media strategy support.

Washington Conservation Action is a statewide environmental advocacy organization advancing environmental policies and pushing for actions that equitably address climate pollution, restore healthy salmon runs, sustain our state’s forests, and protect our democracy. For Washington to remain a national leader on environmental issues, we need environmental champions in elected office and to hold them accountable on our issues. To keep our environment protected, healthy, and vibrant, we are committed to supporting Native candidates, candidates of color, and environmental leaders.  

Scope of Work

  • Identify and author stories for external media and Convene, our biannual magazine, conducting interviews, drafting, and editing features. 
  • Develop proactive media outreach strategies, securing feature stories and coverage of priority issues.  
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director on media relations and strategy, including writing press releases, media pitches, op-eds, and letters to the editor.  

Service Period

The period of performance for the consultant will begin no later than October 1, 2026, and continue until the end of the year, December 31, 2026. Depending on need, the contract may be extended into spring 2027.

Proposal Submission Requirements

Interested consultants are asked to submit proposals consisting of the following: 

  • Cover letter including contact information, any exceptions to the outlined scope of work, and disclosure of whether your firm is a ​​BIPOC​​-owned business enterprise.  
  • Firm or Consultant Background that describes your qualifications to conduct the proposed scope of work and cites any examples of past related experiences.  
  • Two examples of previous projects that ​are ​similar to the scope of work requested within this RFP.  
  • References with contact information for at least three individuals who can speak to their experience with the consultant in conducting work of a similar scope.  

Qualifications

Consultants should be experienced in working with organizations on media relations, strategy, and copywriting. The consultant should possess a strong understanding of narrative development and the media landscape in Washington state. The successful candidate will work directly with the Communications Director to ensure all activities are completed.

Compensation

The contractor will be compensated at an hourly rate of $100 for up to ten hours per week.
