Spring marks a significant milestone for me and my time with WEC. I remember my first day in June 2015: that summer was full of education and outreach around a new coalition, the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy. WEC was a founding member of this innovative coalition of labor unions, community of color organizations, businesses, health advocates, faith, and environmental groups. The Alliance came together to create equitable solutions to climate change and developed a policy that holds equity at its core by investing in clean energy infrastructure like wind and solar, healthy forests, and clean water, and creating thousands of good paying jobs across the state all while cutting pollution.

Now I am thrilled to share that thanks to years of hard work by the Alliance and our partners, we have finalized the Protect Washington Act ballot initiative and we officially started gathering signatures for the Yes on I-1631 campaign!

This is a culmination of my time with WEC: working to center the voices of communities most impacted by climate pollution, advocating for a just transition for workers and rural communities, and protecting clean air and water for future generations. Now, I get work with climate activists across the state to gather 260,000 signatures by early July to get I-1631 on the ballot this fall.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” Washington state has a chance to lead the country with this equitable and effective policy, but it’s no easy task. It’s crucial for WEC to do our part to reach that goal, and I need your help! We need volunteers across the state sharing about the initiative and getting friends, family, and community members to sign petitions. Here’s how you can help:

  1. Request a petition or two so you can gather signatures in your own community. We will mail you a climate activist kit to get you ready to go.
  2. Volunteer to be a climate activist and gather signatures at local events—or organize your own team of volunteers to get sign ups in your community!
