• People for Puget Sound

Our Puget Sound waters, salmon and orca are troubled.

It will take us all to protect our shared home.

We Are Puget Sound is a campaign and new book available in October 2019 that amplifies the voices and ideas working to protect and restore Puget Sound. Our goal is to help engage and inspire people around the region to join together to preserve its ecosystem and the livelihoods that depend on it.

Think back to what drew you in to protecting and recovering Puget Sound and its people. Was it a friend from your community who invited you to an event? When you became aware of a specific threat to wildlife? A school project or news article you read?

People need personal connections to care and be deeply engaged. As we considered how many people now call this region home—not to mention those who will arrive in the coming years—we thought about how we can make it easier for people to become connected with our shared waters.

We Are Puget Sound is a public engagement campaign WEC launched in partnership with Braided River, a conservation imprint of Mountaineers Books, and numerous other organizations working for positive change. The book and campaign connect people and place through stories of remarkable people shepherding in change in their communities, and stories of place told through the eyes of photographers like Art Wolfe.

This moment in Puget Sound recovery demands largescale participation from the community. We worked with community leaders to develop 10 meaningful actions that anyone can take.

In writing one of the chapters of the book, I spoke to Suquamish Tribal Chairman Leonard Forsman about the challenges we face together in the future of Puget Sound recovery. I will leave you with his words:

“With your help, we will pull together and move faster toward recovery. Now more than ever, we need you to take action, collectively and individually. Join us in deciding the future of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea.”
