The Port of Seattle is committed to doing their part to reduce climate change impacts on our region’s health, environment, and economic stability. SeaTac International Airport was the first airport in North America certified for reducing carbon emissions and is the first major airport in the U.S. to systematically evaluate and develop infrastructure with a goal of powering every flight with sustainable biofuel. Already they’ve introduced hybrid and electric cars at the airport and seaport offices, offer plug-in shore power efficiency programs with cruise line partners and will pilot a solar array at Fishermen’s Terminal this year.

These actions are all in effort to meet their Century Agenda’s stringent greenhouse gas reduction goals which were recently updated by the Port Commission to align with King County and City of Seattle goals. The Port plans to continue exploring creative ways to invest in renewable energy production to meet their goal of carbon neutral or negative Port controlled emissions by 2050. But they aren’t stopping there, the Port is also working to lower Port influenced emissions to 80% below 2007 levels by 2050. These ambitious targets reflect the Port’s commitment to take pragmatic and collaborative action to tackle climate change and be a leader amongst ports across the nation.

The Port has pioneered innovative ways to improve the environment and create jobs through multiple environmental programs related to Energy Efficiency and Renewables, Air Quality, Water Quality and Waste Management, Wildlife and Habitat Stewardship, Noise, and Remediation and Cleanup.
