Our Forests Goals

Carbon Conference

The world continues to experience the frightening reality of the climate crisis: wildfire, hurricanes, historic flood events, drought, and the devastating effects of environmental racism. The urgency of this moment requires us to imagine new ways forward. The Pacific Northwest’s forests, if managed intentionally with this new reality in mind, can be powerful tools for carbon storage, ecosystem services, community resilience, and environmental justice. At WCA, we continue to explore and support both innovative and traditional approaches to ecological forestry, learning from the lived experiences of all of Washington’s communities.

Building the Climate Smart Wood Economy

Thriving forests and a thriving economy are not mutually exclusive. That’s why we launched a 5-year-project to build a climate-smart wood economy in Pierce, County WA! This project is supported by a $25 million USDA Climate Smart Commodities grant and includes seven other partner organizations with a shared vision: to expand climate-smart forestry across the Pacific Northwest and to increase access to and recognition for the benefits of climate-smart wood products. Our work connects small forest landowners, Tribal nations, and community forest managers, with local mills, wood manufacturers, and downstream buyers who seek climate smart wood products. In doing so, we intend to build a local, environmentally just wood economy in Pierce County while improving local forest health, climate resilience, and carbon storage.

NEW! Funding opportunity for landowners in Pierce County, Washington. Washington Conservation Action now offers cost-share assistance directly to private forestland owners in Pierce County, Washington. Cost-share funding supports stewardship activities that increase carbon sequestration and storage, improve wildlife habitat, mitigate wildfire risk, and improve your forest’s resilience to climate change.
